USPS has no control over something in customs, so emailing them would be pointless. This means that it is in US customs for inspection. But it' s not necessary that exactly yours package is for inspection, it could be that other from the same bag and therefore all are held for a little.

Normally it doesn't take a lot of time, couple of business days, but can take a while. If it takes too long, you or customer can contact USPS and ask for customs contacts. Customs inspections can last anywhere from a couple of days to three weeks and sometimes even longer. NY can be slow and Chicago used to be but has speeded up lately.
