So checking your mail does not mean checking the actual contents of that mail, but the technical aspects of the mailing process and the safety of the packages.
Then and only then does mail enter into the final phase, where it is approved for the final delivery and can reach its original destination. If irregularities are found in the ramp reports or on the envelopes, or if the postal employees discover that the mail is eligible to poses certain risks, this process can take longer.
In the end, almost all of the mail reaches its intended destination. So as you can see, there is an entire complicated process in order for your mail to get through customs and reach you, and that is why, when you receive the information that your package or mail is inbound out of customs, you should appreciate all the effort and the hard work it took for it to arrive safely where it was supposed to.

USPS has no control over something in customs, so emailing them would be pointless. This means that it is in US customs for inspection. But it' s not necessary that exactly yours package is for inspection, it could be that other from the same bag and therefore all are held for a little.
Normally it doesn't take a lot of time, couple of business days, but can take a while. If it takes too long, you or customer can contact USPS and ask for customs contacts. Also, sometimes USPS do not scan package after that, so it also could be that it is delivered while you think it is still sitting in customs. And no, you shouldn't worry : Was it high value package?

Customs inspections can last anywhere from a couple of days to three weeks and sometimes even longer. NY can be slow and Chicago used to be but has speeded up lately.
